Amway is the 2nd largest MLM Company in the world, second only to Avon. As a leader in cosmetics, household goods, hard goods and just about anything you want (They have THOUSANDS of products) Amway is the leader in almost many categories regarding size, volume, distributor force, etc.
Because they are a leader in the field, they also had the dubious honor of paving the way for our business models. Decades ago, MLM was considered a pyramid scheme and was under the watchful eye of the Federal Trade Commission. Thanks to the legal team at Amway, your business model is well protected so long as the company you work with abides by the rules (See FTC Rules regarding multi-level marketing for more information).
Additionally, the brunt of many jokes regarding the cult-like nature of our industry is directed specifically to Amway. The obsession many distributors have with their products and company is legendary.
Notably, due to their size, the company has also been under fire for the manner in which some large distributor organizations train and motivate their downline. Having personally been an Amway distributor for 5 years, I can attest to the powerful suggestions and influence my upline had to encourage the “optional” tool purchases I had to make on a weekly and monthly basis in order to stay motivated, informed and in the system. The system I was involved with encouraged me to purchase 2 cassette tapes per week; attend an open meeting each week, a major convention every quarter and a national meeting once per year. Additionally, there were supporting documents, CD’s and other sales tools that could be purchased as necessary. Sounds like a reasonable program-right? Certainly there are franchises that have even stricter requirements than these. The motivation and ongoing training available was first class and relevant not only to my Amway distributorship, but to other businesses as well.
NOTE: It was a very small group of diamond level or above distributors that had a secondary business of selling their downline motivation tools, seminars and functions that caused a large amount of the negative internet buzz about Amway in recent years. The corporation has always abided by the FTC rules and has been transparent about the products, distribution and compensation. Sharing the business plan accurately, using Amway approved literature never got anyone in trouble or created any misleading information.
In fact, during my tenure as a regional sales rep. at a major wireless phone company, 3 out of the top 4 producers at the time all had Amway businesses they built on the side. This was a testament to the motivational system we had all signed on for…not Amway.
Everyone has an opinion about Amway. Some love it, others hate it. Most don’t know much about it. As a modestly successful distributor for 5 years, I am prejudiced. While I was involved, I had a terrific time, but honestly I spent more on those tools than I brought in as income. This was a flaw in the business model from a clinical point of view.
On the other hand, I learned more about human relationships, selling and influence than ever before. It was BECAUSE of this system, that I am able to be a more successful businessman, public speaker and father. A person who influences another in a positive manner should not be ignored. Teachers, athletes, or public figures who inspire others give us the hope and belief in ourselves. Is there a greater gift imaginable?
